In honor of the Third Annual Brigid in Cyberspace Poetry Reading
I am digging out an old poem I wrote, which Glenn set to beautiful music, and that I recently heard was still being sung by Maggi at gatherings. It is hard to express how good this makes me feel. Maggi, if you are reading this, thank you so much :-}
Wild Moon
(click link above to listen to Glenn singing the song)
Wild creatures come to worship
Seeking out their sacred place
Each awaits the moon in silence,
In Mother Earth's embrace.
As the moon crests distant hilltops
Strands of light seek out the glade.
Every creature's limned in silver,
Every leaf and twig and blade.
Fox and Otter rise to meet her,
Hawk and Owl spread their wings.
Each one gathered pays her homage,
Lifts up face to sky and sings.
"Mother Huntress we give honor
With each kill each final breath
Blood is spilled but never wasted
We are yours from birth 'til death."
As their voices climb the moonlight
All begin to dance and sway
Weaving out the sacred circle
Ancient instincts guide the way.
In the center of the clearing
Herne appears with antlered brow.
Faster fiercer spins the circle
All earth thunders with their vow.
Now appears the Goddess laughing
Wrapped in Herne's beloved embrace
With a glance the dance slows tempo
All the fierceness turns to grace.
"Come my children come to greet me"
Each approaches her with awe
Each she blesses with her power
Lending speed or sharper claw.
Now the time has come for parting
Herne and Goddess take their leave
'Til the moonlight calls to worship
All those creatures who believe.
