Stanford University has those lining the fence facing the main drag along the side of campus. The first time I saw them, I wondered how on earth those red roses were climbing and blooming like that in such a climate! Because nothing else was green around them. But they were. They're strong. (And probably drip-watered underground, actually. I'd never heard of such a thing when we got here.)
